In order for a move to go as smoothly as possible, it’s important not to skip any steps. Packing correctly is the most important thing to do when moving.
Prepare everything in advance
Use different materials
It’s important not to use the same types of boxes and materials to store your various items. While some of your belongings will be easily transported in a simple cardboard box, others will require the use of plastic boxes. You can choose reinforced boxes to protect your most fragile items.
Don’t overload moving boxes
It’s easy to fill a box without thinking about how much it will weigh. If you decide to use cardboard boxes for your move, you need to make sure that they will support the weight of your items. You also need to think about yourself, as boxes that are too heavy can injure your back.
Filling the moving boxes
This may contradict the previous point, but it’s not. Try to fill your boxes so that they don’t collapse under the load of the next one when you go to stack them. The aim is to balance everything out, and to divide the objects evenly between the boxes, taking into account their size.
Sort before you pack
Making boxes can also be an opportunity to sort out the things you no longer use. You can throw out anything that’s been sitting in the back of your cupboards for years, so you won’t be cluttered when you move. Alternatively, you can make boxes for all those particular items, so you can give them away or sell them later.
Detail each box as much as possible
Making your boxes as detailed as possible will save you a lot of time when you arrive at your new home. All you have to do is read what’s marked on each box to arrange your items in the right places, and open the ones you need immediately. No more anxiety about unpacking!
Use what you’ve got to protect your belongings
The idea here is to use the items you already have at your disposal to protect more fragile ones. For example, you can use blankets, pillows and towels to protect vases or crockery. You’ll also save space, as you won’t have to use all kinds of paper.
Plan your last meals
We advise you to leave with an empty fridge and as little food as possible. Indeed, if you still have dozens of cans or any food left over, this means you’ll have to put them in boxes too. So you’ll be putting even more effort into the move. Fresh food can also be a problem when transporting your fridge, as the cold chain will be broken.
Pack a few boxes of essentials
A single day is not enough to unpack all your boxes and tidy up your new home. You’ll need to allow several days before you’re completely at home. That’s why it’s a good idea to pack a few boxes with your essentials, such as toiletries and linen.
Pack valuables separately
Separate the boxes containing all your valuables and keep an eye on them throughout the moving process. Loss and theft can happen, so it’s up to you to keep an eye on what’s dearest to you!
